10 to 16, January 2026
The National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC), Bangalore, organized a week-long seminar on “Lay Leadership and Mission in the Church” from 10th to 16th January 2026. The programme brought together 46 participants from 15 dioceses, including 21 women, reflecting the growing commitment of the laity to the Church’s mission.
The seminar began with an inaugural address by Rev. Dr. A. John Baptist, who emphasized the vital role of the laity in fostering a synodal Church rooted in communion, participation, and mission. Fr. X.D. Selvaraj, the Coordinator of the seminar, outlined the objectives and salient features of the programme.
Sessions throughout the week addressed key themes such as social analysis, youth realities, the vision of Vatican II, inculturation, and the Reign of God. Fr. Maria Vincent spoke on inculturation, stressing its relevance in making the Gospel meaningful within diverse cultural contexts. Fr. Maria Micheal, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Laity Commission, contributed insights on the role of the laity in the Church.
Participants were enriched through inputs on family life, women’s leadership, Canon Law, and participatory structures within the Church. Special focus was given to lay movements and associations, highlighting their contribution to both Church and society. The celebration of Pongal and the daily Eucharist added spiritual depth and cultural richness to the programme.
The seminar concluded with the presentation of action plans, distribution of certificates, and a renewed commitment among participants to serve as effective lay leaders. The programme proved to be a meaningful journey of learning, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
